Local 8A History

According to the information we have about our local, it was formed after World War II and consisted of the Army Corps of Engineers at the Lock (Hiriam Chittenden) and the local employees of what was then the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (the Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center). In the early years, the local provided a means to hold social events in addition to collective bargaining.

Over the years, employees of other organizations have been included in the local. The commissary employees of the Sand Point Naval Base were included as well as the Army Corps of Engineer’s main office (E. Marginal Way Office). And very recently the NOAA HAZMAT unit was added.

Local 8 affiliated with the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) in June 1972, and was certified by the FLRA (Federal Labor Relations Authority). The local then changed its union affiliation to the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE) and became Local 8A on March 18th, 2000 after approval by FLRA. (A desire for change in national exposure and a more appropriate representation were the main reasons).

The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO & CLC, is a progressive labor union representing more than 75,000 men and women in professional, technical, administrative and associated occupations.  IFPTE is a diverse union representing employees in a wide variety of occupations in three distinct business sectors. Our members are comprised of workers employed by federal, public and private employers. We balance the broad range of our members' interests by adhering to democratic processes and consensus decision-making.

The IFPTE performs research to assist Locals in bargaining, lobbies Congress for changes in laws that would benefit IFPTE members, provides legal assistance to Locals, provides staff help to any Local that requires assistance, and coordinates national organizing efforts.

Information on the vote by Army Corps, Seattle District, professional employees regarding union representation by IFPTE Local 8A can be found here.  The vote is being held from November 14 until 4pm PST, December 12, 2007.
